Focus on Your Message to Beat Public Speaking Fears
I recently met with a speaker I greatly admire to find out more about her public speaking skills. This person regularly speaks to huge audiences of over two thousand people and has never had any public speaking training. What I found particularly fascinating was her perspective on presenting to such large audiences. Let’s face it: speaking to such a large audience might be daunting for even experienced speakers. But, she is so focused on the message she wants to deliver to her audience, that she forgets to be nervous during the presentation. She didn’t even consider herself to be a speaker or a presenter. Instead, she considers herself to be a teacher with important information to deliver in order to help her audience.
This highlights a really critical point about public speaking and presenting. If you invest enough time and effort developing a message that you really want to share with others, then your message becomes your focus rather than your nerves. Public speaking is just another medium for getting your message across – focus on developing a message that your really want to share with others and the act of delivery will become easier.
